How does the UK parliament work compared to the US congress? A lot of questions, and a lot of answers in this week’s new British VS American 😀 Hope ya like …
Hey y'all! Hope ya liked the new video! 🙂 It's meant to be a fun, surface-level look at how parliament operates vs congress. Based on previous feedback, I wanted to spend a lot of time in this video getting a lot of information from Jazza. I definitely learned a lot and had a fun time. One extra thing though, in 2011, parliament passed an act prohibiting the queen from dissolving parliament. This was unknown to Jazza and me before filming. Just wanted to add that li'l correction. 🙂
The U.S. constitution works the other way around, it says that the federal government can do, while everything else it doesn’t mention, it leaves to the states, for example, the Constitution grants powers to the Federal Executive to run the military, therefore they can run it, now the thing it does mention can be pretty general like minting coins and a running a welfare state, in that sentence you grant pretty much all the powers the federal executive has.
Some corrections: Votes of No Confidence in the leader of a party are based on the Party Constitution, for the Tories VoNCs have a 12 month cool down.
The Queen doesn't have the legal authority to immediately dissolve Parliament under the Fixed Term Parliaments Act 2011. Parliament has to agree to a general election before either House can be dissolved.
Not sure why Americans often seem to feel the need to apologize for us, and to say they like other systems better when they know NOTHING about them. Except that they don't know much of anything about our OWN system either frankly, nor how it compares across the globe over the test of time. No other country in the world has taken on the system of government that the USA has, and here we stand still, hurting in 2020 as everyone is, but not broken. Still, we remain the beacon of hope for republic democracy, still by far the strongest nation on earth both economically & militarily some 245 years later.
We have great heritage and great shame in our past, no on can deny that. I'm an Anglo-American (some German & native American too), 8th generation back to the roots of the American Revolutionary War – even before. I still believe in Britain and what she stands for. Her system didn't work for us so we chose to leave & govern ourselves, just as Britain is now leaving the EU and rightly so – although thankfully she didn't have to declare war to do it. But we kept her as a close ally & friend. I hope most Brits can agree with this. And I wish the UK, all the best as she breaks the chains of the EU and once again is fully independent and sovereign.
Evan, I have to state that the Queen of Australia or at least the Queen’s Representative in Australia, “The Governor General” has ‘Dismissed’ the Government of the country the labor party back in 1975. Yet we still respect the monarchy and have voted in a referendum since against becoming a republic. Question for you Evan, America never seems to hold ‘Referendums’ is this correct or is this just that the government of the day never wants to let the people have that kind of decision making power? NSW in Oz
Proportional representation will also mean lot of undesirables from the extremes will come into power and we will perpetually bea hung parliament. UK politicians are still not as bad as US politicians.

Fuck off Bercow
In Argentina we have 129 articles plus the preamble in the Constitution
The guest, Jazza, reminds me of Alan Rickman in the way he closes his teeth when he speaks. 🙂

Lot of misconceptions here from the british side
There is law in the UK where all election materials have to be taken down within 2 weeks after the elections

Both systems seem so crazy… Probably mainly because you both have only two parties competing from seats.

1911 Parliament Act (?)
Am I the only one who thinks this is way to confusing
Informative and entertaining. 10 of 10?

2:07 "We're just like, 'We probably should have one,' so we just do it." Said no American ever since George Washington.
