Maradona runs right past my mates uncle in the build up to this goal! And I played with him in a celebrity match years ago, known him since I was a kid and he always says I wish i would of just brought the bastard down ?? (Peter Reid)
Last matchday of German Soccer Bundesliga in the 2000/2001 season. Bayern München is 3 points up at the top of the League over Schalke. Bayern has to lose its last game in Hamburg and Schalke has to beat Unterhaching in their last game in the old "Parkstadion." Schalke wins 5-3. Hamburg vs. Bayern is scoreless until the last moments of the game. In the last minute Hamburg scores to make it 1-0 what would give Schalke the Championship. Schalke gets the wrong information that the game is over from a German TV journalist and the fans storm the field just to see the last action of Hamburg vs. Bayern on their video screen. Matthias Schober the Hamburg goal keeper picks up a pass back to him with his hands what's illegal. So Bayern gets a free kick in the Hamburg penalty box. Patrick Andersson takes it and scores his only goal in last Bundesliga match for Bayern to give Bayern the title back with the last shot of the season. ? Btw. Hamburg keeper Matthias Schober was on a loan from Schalke to Hamburg that time. ?
If we want to be politically correct to switch #2 and #1 because #2 has 90 deaths, then the Hillsborough disaster which resulted in 96 deaths in the greatest sport should have even topped that then. Then change this list title from Crazy Moment in Sport to Audience Death Moment in Sport. Smh
Number 2 was sad and horrible but I honestly never heard of the incident until I watched this video. The #1 on the other hand, I've been aware since in grade school. So yeah, I would say I still agree with the list despite it's politically correct to switch #2 with #1.
LOL, Maradona's handball was just genius,
represents the mischief of a player defending the colors of his country against those of one who murdered thousands of his compatriots in an unjust war. Also there have been so many scandals and injustices in the world soccer
and you choose this over all, not for soccer but entery sports. This video is full of bs.
Lol the first clip. The guy from the band who gets knocked down deserved it, he had like 10 full seconds of seeing a player running in his direction. Just stands in place like a dumbass.
The #1 justifiably deserves its spot and rightly so. As a human being I am disheartened by tragic deaths especially in a mass scale and I couldn't comprehend/fully understand such loss of life but I also do think people can't comprehend the gravity of both hand of god and goal of century by Maradonna. Am inclined to side with the Maradonna moment because I do fill its gravity as much as am not associated with both the countries mentioned. Bill Shankly once stated that "Some people think football is a matter of life and death. I assure you, it's much more serious than that" and this was definitely one of the games that just took a life on its own. There was animosity brooding between the two nations starting from when Britain invaded Argentina's Buenos Aires and later on, successfully captured Las Malvinas/ Falklands, It didn't help that in 1966 after England defeated Argentina, One of their own referred to them as animals in a headlines and the British press reveled in it. Argentina in retaliation tried to unsuccessfully recapture the Falklands and ended up with many casualties almost thrice that of the British. So in Argentina this was not only a national tragedy but humiliation by a gloating opponent who made racist comments and ended up beating them. So this match wasn't football, it was stage for revenge and animosity on a national level(Football and politics had merged in a bad way). Then in a match that everyone neutral is spectating Maradonna cheats and gets away with it, that would have grabbed the headline that day or any day but that wasn't even the end. Maradonna then scores goal of the century 4 minutes later, Gary Linker who was the England striker that time sums it best "It was the one time in my career, i felt that i ought to applaud" after seeing that goal. So you have two goals, one from cheating and other from a moment of pure genius, add to that context of this whole match(massive hatred and animosity between two sides), Then you get the most craziest moment in sports and rightly so. Context is everything and I hope i gave more insight to why it deserves that spot.
I still haven't watched a baseball game since they blew off the World Series when Montreal was in great position to win for the first time. I'm a Montrealer

Americans are crazy? Maradona is a football player, wtf soccer is?
Monica Seles had 8 Grand Slam titles before her 20th birthday ?
No doubt she could probably be the greatest tennis player in women tennis history.
