It takes place in the world of Eora (Pillars of Eternity franchise). So I believe it shares the lore of Pillars and is also canon to it. I guess think if they made another Skyrim game, but called it something totally different, and turned it into an isometric game (but of course give it different plot and stuff). So it is the reverse of that for Pillars of Eternity. I saw a video explaining this, and hopefully I understood him correctly.
Meh, Obsidian is a massively overrated developer based on how painfully average and dull The Outer Worlds was (in my opinion). Now it seems they're just trying to copy the Skyrim formula, not to mention the console exclusivity. Pass.
