You may have been following the political debates in the news these days, and maybe some of it didn’t make much sense to you. Politics is often a difficult topic …
France is not socialist. Also not a very good description of the left. You forgot to include their far left wing social opinions on gender, apparent racism, apparent white and male privilege, feminism.
You are a fantastic and delightful English teacher but I am sorry to say that the content of this video is so oversimplified that there are a lot things wrong and it can be misleadind. I will briefly explain a few.
– Left and right comes from the French Revolution and the ideological and spatial division within the National Assembly.
– Communism is the last stage of socialism. In communism there is no State. When we talk about communist contries, in reality they are just socialist, althoug they pursue communism (at least in theory).
– I would not say that France is a socialist country (that would actually mean, it is similar to Cuba, the USSR…). Maybe we could say, it is "social". Spain and Germany, for example, are defined as "social and democratic State subject to the rule of law" in their constitutions. Also, we have private healthecare in Europe, not just State runned.
– Nationalism is indeed a big part of fascism, but it can be also combined with any other ideology. The other important component of fascism is corporativism.
– France, USA and Canada are liberal countries, as most Europe and western nations. It is unfair and extremely inacurate to say a nation is left, right of center. It is true though that in Europe, liberalism has incorporated more socialist ideas than in North America.
Book descriptions are useless in the real world. Marxism on paper is wonderful. Has it been in the real world? What a nightmare when people see the truth. In communist as in socialist countries that follow the Marxist model, people always end up as cannon fodder. There are countries that are conservative and have social programs.
So, you can have the elites on the left also be the ones with all the power, CCP of China, for example, who do everything with the idea of staying in power. They're fascist, in that only their cadre are allowed to run the business. Only the CCP and military apparatchitks are allowed in their business world. So, your class is sorely lacking in reality.
So, this seems pretty inaccurate. Every historian and political scientist I've read traces the left right divide to the French Revolution, not some older English Government, and your description of the ruling system of England doesn't sound right either, but it's hard to know what period you are referring to. You description of 'book communism' is widely inaccurate. Communists don't call for an equal distribution of everything, quite the opposite, they call for a division based on needs, and they don't call for individual ownership of the means of production (ie land in your example) at all. Companies and land are held collectively, not by the government, but by the people, the government is just the tool to regulate the polity. And you confuse Socialism with Democratic Socialism, two completely different things. Also, France has private for profit hospitals, so this is wrong as well. And your notion that the government is somehow separate and not made up of people is pretty ridiculous. What do you think government is, so kind of construct from outer space? As to Conservatives, the description you give is of Liberalism, not Conservatism, Conservatives believe in hierarchy, and no individual rights except those granted by THE LEADER, however defined. They believe is total government, The King was seen as the owner of the polity, and could do whatever he liked in his domain. Dukes and Barons were not independent, they were vassals of the King, and completely subject to his authority, although this depends a bit on the time and place discussed. Their authority derived from his. Just as his derived from God. Monarchism is more truly the highest form of conservatism, and Fascism is an attempt to adapt Monarchism to a modern setting. You can't have a democracy of the government tells people what to do? What are you talking about? Are you suggesting there is no such thing as democracy? Do you understand that the role of government is rulership? Telling people what to do is the function of all government. Capitalism and conservatism go together? Do you think Feudal societies were capitalist? The ideology of capitalism is Liberalism, not conservatism, anyone familiar with the history of conservatism knows that the conservatives were initially very hostile to capitalism, this is what the French Revolution was all about. Most people who call themselves conservatives today are actually liberals, it's just they don't understand what either word means. As to your weird use of Star Wars toys, Jabba the hut was a gang leader, a capitalist, so I don't know what you think he represents, but he's about as far from the left as you can get. I guess at this point I have to wonder of this is some kind of parody video.
As to the notion that social programs make you moderate, The Nazis had social programs, do you think they were moderate?
the guy doesn't know shit about what he's saying. fascism from the Latin fascia which means Bundle = all together (all for one and ….. remember?). which means that the interests of an individual don't mean anything, only the interests of the whole society do matter. And this is what literally in Mussolini's doctrine, who's previously was a communist and was a chief editor of the Italian communist newspaper Il Popolo d'Italia. so, fascism is a pure Leftist Idea. the only difference with communism is that communism believes in permanent revolution until the last republic on earth and fascism care only about their country. Fascism has all the features of leftist ideas of today. High taxes, everything controlled by the state, police state, censorship on everything (today we call it political correctness), the state controls what you think, what you say, what you consume or want to consume.
Fascism is not on the right. Fascism follows very closely to socialism. Benito mussoli was also congratulated by Vladimir Lenin upon turning Italy fascist. Socialists reject fascism, as it's detrimental to their cause. Fascism is just socialism with a national identity.
So in America you have rights. If the far left have the right to be Communist pieces of shit, Don't the Far-Right have the right to be Nazi pieces of shit?
France is not socialist. Also not a very good description of the left. You forgot to include their far left wing social opinions on gender, apparent racism, apparent white and male privilege, feminism.
Best class EVER!!

Wow u know how to confuse
Just to make it clear: There ist no regular Left-wing-Party in the US, which is actually sad…
Greens = Centre-left
Democrats = Centre
Libertarians = Centre-right
Republicans = Right-wing
James–not just my English teacher but also inspiration.
Very infomative… For me.thanks

I consider fascism to be left wing. It is collectivist and statist at its core.
Thx James! Your video is awseome
Very clear. Thank you James.

Um, USSR is not what we call Russia today. Like Yugoslavia is not what we call Croatia, or Serbia today.
I asked my friend she said I was a leftist so I’m watching some videos
I think this guy is a great teacher
I wish you had been my teacher in school. You made this subject interesting and easy to understand. Thank you!!
Thanks for the great video! Very informative, and left me wanting more…
I got 3/3 😉
Fascism is not on the right.
Fascism follows very closely to socialism. Benito mussoli was also congratulated by Vladimir Lenin upon turning Italy fascist.
Socialists reject fascism, as it's detrimental to their cause.
Fascism is just socialism with a national identity.
Thanks for explaining this in easy terms without using fancy words. Great video.
