My long overdue response to all the comments about the film's use of the phrase "Nazi soldiers." It was a mistake, and I regret it. When we recorded the narration for the other languages (available on the Vimeo account), I corrected it so that it states "German soldiers." I need to go into the recording studio and make the correction to the english version too (along with a handful of other corrections), but I have regrettably not yet done so. While it was certainly an error, I do not think it fits the comparisons many are making, i.e. that it is like calling American soldiers "Republican soldiers." I want to point out that in the case of Nazi Germany, it is correct to say Nazi invasions, led my Nazi commanders, which became Nazi occupations as part of a Nazi war effort. Calling soldiers of a Nazi war effort Nazi soldiers was a mistake, for sure, but a more complicated mistake than such analogies. As a personal note, I will say that I have close family members in Germany, and I feel that the transformation of the country after the war is a beautiful and inspiring story that we often take for granted. The word Nazi is often used to show separation between the German people today and a political movement of their past. In this case I screwed up and got it backwards.
The deaths of the Soviets. Poorly trained and poorly equipped. Stalin didn't care, he knew he had enough men to spare. He didn't fight for good, he fought for power. Even Hitler cared for his fellow Germans, Stalin cared for no-one.
Stalin stayed warm in his Kremlin eating fancy food while his people bled and starved for him.
This is a warning. This is what comes out of communism. And we must all be wary as the communist ideology rises once more. People in streets claiming to fight against racism, burning down buildings hidden behind a black helmet with a hammer and sickle.
Antifa, BLM. On the outside they seem good, we all hate fascism and racism don't we? But these groups are openly communist, these words "Black Lives Matter" painted on every wall, sewed into t-shirts and uttered by many tongues. It is not as innocent a phrase as it seems on the outside.
People are buying BLM t-shirts for their children and teaching them about the cause, ingraining communism into their brains from a young age.
And from the east rises another communist nation, more powerful than the USSR ever was. The People's Republic of China. Every time you buy a shirt from China you support its government and its actions, the cotton that makes the shirt is picked by forced Uyghur labour in camps resembling the horrors of Auschwitz.
Even if you avoid the country and its goods you still aren't safe, for its influence has creeped into our western democracies. It owns the land we walk on and the companies we buy from, it's so bad that they even own the technology we use to communicate, huge 5G networks built by a company that can spy on your communications.
Every phone call you make on 5G, every video you post on TikTok, every Zoom call you make they can see it all.
You probably didn't know this? Why? Because it's covered up, replaced with propaganda. Even in the comments section of this very video I can bet it's here. They call them Wumao. They will spread lies online and attempt to smear the reputations of the good western democracies.
And if you think this doesn't affect you, you're mistaken. You're at home reading this comment, right? You should be at work, school or whatever activity you have. But no, you have to stay at home because there's a virus killing people. It didn't have to be this way but the CCP knew about this for months and hid it for months until it grew to wide to hide and now people are dying, economies suffering, jobs lost. China lied, people died.
So next time when you see communism, reject it, cut it out before the tumour of communism grows. When you see people chanting for a communist organisation in the street just remember. Remember the Soviets who bled, remember the Uyghurs trapped in camps, remember the Chinese slaughtered by the red guard for their opinions and remember the Koreans so malnourished they had to resort to cannibalism just to barely stay alive. Remember these victims.
Be careful what slogans you chant, be careful where you buy from, be careful who you vote for and be careful who you side with. For communism is on the rise again. Make sure you are not its ally.
History is repeating itself in 2020. The Uyghurs are being genocided by Communist China. I sense a new conflict arising. Perhaps the toll will be similar. The age of peace is over. The actions of the PRC are mirroring Nazi Germany's.
you realize so many people have military grandparents, if some people didnt die, for example some famous people could be here, you could even have a friend that never existed because hitler and hirohito
Well made and researched video. @Neil Halloran, may I point out that you missed the man-made famine of Bengal, British India where around 3 million Bengali civilians died mainly due to Winston Churchill diverting Bengal crop yields for British soldiers and civilians during the war. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bengal_famine_of_1943
Why do I see so many comments trying to justify or distance German people of the ww2 era from Nazi? A lot of people are guilty of complacency and acting as if nothing was happening, the German people of the WW2 Era specifically are guilty. Just accept that it was atrocious and try to learn from mistakes…that's the essence of being human ffs.
I think it's over 70. If you count the other countries like Brazil. And the deaths from the eastern front that are still being found today. And all the cover-ups from the Russians. I would say… 78 or 81 million.
When I was studying history in US the two main things that pissed me off were the fact that even the teacher thought the USA and UK won the world, and the fact that there were debates among students whether Hiroshima bombings were justified or not. I mean how can somebody possible say it was a good thing?
Calling the Wehrmacht soldiers "Nazis soldiers" isn't a mistake. It is absolutely correct. In Germany, since 1945 there has been a narrative of a "clean Wehrmacht" claiming that it was the SS that carried out all of the atrocities and not the Wehrmacht. This is false and the Wehrmacht at every stage of the war, especially in the East committed ideologically motivated crimes against humanity. The Wehrmacht were Nazi soldiers. A mistake you did make was attributing 36 million deaths to the An-Lushan revolt. There was a census before the revolt which counted 53 million people in China and a census after the revolt which counted 17 million people. However, that doesn't mean that two thirds of the population of China died but rather that the bureaucracy responsible for conducting the census had broken down as a result of the revolt.
The true hero’s are the soviets love them or hate them they changed the war so much with there sacrifice if there lives but tbh Stalin and hitler hated each other so I bet that’s the reason they sent so many men even tho both could of surrendered or fell back
Most tragic thing for citizens of USSR(like me) is that most of Americans and European peoples sure that USSR was part of evil on WW2, and sure that USSR and Germany were friends, alliance of evil. But we weren't. We, USSR, spend most lives in comparison to all other during World War 2. We had to do this to stop unhumanable nacists. And know history has rewriten and hidded, so Americans call us evil murders in WW2. Imagine, how painful it is for us to hear it, after all that we have done there.
I read a comment below which stated; "… this is sad because everyone of them had names." It breaks my heart to think just how much of an understatement that is. Every single one of them had their own dreams and aspirations. Some would've liked to become doctors or engineers, ushering humanity to a brighter future; others would've been excellent artists with the likes to rival Gogh or Leonardo. Some would've liked to laze around their backyard on a warm summer, others might've preferred the salty whiff of the seaside. They had fancies, loves, hates, likes, bores, interests, hobbies. They wondered if they might be pursued again. They had friends, lovers, families, colleagues. They wondered if they might ever see them again, save for the photos they kept near their breast. They had names. That is the only metric we can use to remember them now. Names. Such a miniscule noun that betrays what they were. They were human. Flesh, bone and soul. Like you and me.
I come back to this video frequently. When things stop making sense and it all seems wrong, it helps put things into perspective. Today is nothing. Our problems are nothing. Nothing like this.
4 years late but have to get it of my chest. I grew up in the Netherlands an western/allied country. When we got to the topic of WW2 in history class we were told that the USA and GB defeated the nazi's and saved our country and there was a country by the name of USSR that also fought in that war not much more than that the most I've seen about that was the movie enemies at the gate which was shown in class. In sense it's correct that western Europe was liberated by the allied forces of GB and USA, it's almost criminal how much was left out I learned later on how hard the battle was on the eastern front.
The general idea of democratic countries and especially in the US is that we should be free and freedom is worth fighting for. Freedom of choice… as long as that choice is democracy. And if you do something they don't like they come to intervene most notorious was the Vietnam war the country said lets do Communism and the USA said how about no. We are accusing China and former USSR of brainwashing the Citizens through education (which is true) and controlling the media. But in the end what we get to see on TV what learn at school is still controlled by our Governments to a lesser extend. The Afghan and Irak wars have brought out many speculations and conspiracy theories and not to say whats true or not but after the whole ordeal what did we really fight for?
No country is perfect as they are all ruled by humans and we are fundamentally flawed. I've read so many comments hear so much around me that downplays one nation like China or USSR for being basically communist. While still up talking our own western sphere. We got more freedom here in than in Communist states regarding to media, but in the end it's their choice. I've spoken to both Russians and Chinese and most of them want to see the communist state return or are content with communist China and who are we to judge them. Democracy has plenty of flaws in its own right, where large companies have to much to say in the daily politics that's capitalism.
4 years later there is a lot more world tension going on than just Covid-19 if we want to have a lasting great peace, we should respect each other for who we are no matter the culture, religion, ideology or the colour of their skin.
I see it as spine chilling that after so many wars , after so much death and destruction so many people are still racist and anti-semit to this day and a lot even consider their ww2 leaders (on the axis side) as "heroes" and "saviors of their country" truly disgusting.

The Long Peace, like the Pax Romana (the Roman peace), that lasted 206 years, will come to a violent end some day.
The deaths of the Soviets. Poorly trained and poorly equipped. Stalin didn't care, he knew he had enough men to spare. He didn't fight for good, he fought for power. Even Hitler cared for his fellow Germans, Stalin cared for no-one.

I'm shocked to imagine the number of people and soldiers with injuries and permanent disabilities after end of ww2.
you realize so many people have military grandparents, if some people didnt die, for example some famous people could be here, you could even have a friend that never existed because hitler and hirohito
"We have defeated the wrong enemy" – General S Patton
Remember, History is written by the victors.
To think if the soviets “dear” leader Stalin cared about his people more you’d think less would have died.
Given the amount of dead people here, some of them had same names. Maybe one Ivan survived, other did not.
And as always they forget about Mexico
9:43
Belarus had a higher death percentage than Poland.
Well made and researched video. @Neil Halloran, may I point out that you missed the man-made famine of Bengal, British India where around 3 million Bengali civilians died mainly due to Winston Churchill diverting Bengal crop yields for British soldiers and civilians during the war.

if the big evil in human history is NAZI, then the next is SOVIET
Very sobering.

The Soviets were heroes, without them and their sacrifices we’d be in a very different world
Imagine fighting for your country (France) and get killed only to be called a coward by keyboard warriors
Where's India?
we shall never surrender
Almost all of the info in this video is wrong
These wars have to happen, sometimes war like this is the only way to save the future
I have seen this Video a few Times now.. every Time the Soviet Deaths go up and up it gets a few Tears in my Eyes
Glad that USA saved the Soviets
Nothing compared to WW1
8.7 million Soviet soldiers killed. Just insane ?
I cried watching.
The S in stalin stands for a "small price to pay for salvation".
This video has so many errors and inaccuracies… would take hours to write them all down with source information.
russia lost about 22Million i read in several books
I think it's over 70. If you count the other countries like Brazil. And the deaths from the eastern front that are still being found today. And all the cover-ups from the Russians. I would say… 78 or 81 million.
Germany in ww2 was all about quality over quantity, but the soviet union was all about quantity over quality, and we now see who came out on top.

Soviet be like – go fight bare handed
Not enough focus on the Pacific theatre
I wonder how my Grandfather was during this war. He was about the same age as me when it concluded, and I’m 15
U forgot tom sullivan

The part about how so many commies died was my favorite??
