Reishaun Michael Hopkins Malden man, 18, struck and killed by two cars on Route 128 in Newton

Rest stop worker from Malden killed crossing Route 128

An 18-year-old man killed after he was struck in both the north and southbound lanes of Route 128 in Newton today has been identified as a Malden resident who worked at a nearby rest stop.

Reishaun Michael Hopkins was employed by the Honey Dew Donuts located in the Newton rest area and was normally scheduled to work day shift, State Police said this afternoon.

“We were deeply saddened to hear this news and our condolences go out to the family,” Bob Hogan, the owner and operator of the store, said through a spokesperson.

Hopkins was apparently crossing the highway on foot around 6:30 a.m. today when he was hit by a vehicle traveling northbound, State Police said. The impact sent Hopkins over the concrete median dividing the highway and into the southbound lanes, where he was hit by another vehicle.

Hopkins, who was pronounced dead at the scene, landed within sight of the doughnut shop on the southbound side of Route 128.

No charges have been filed against the drivers involved, State Police said. The investigation is continuing. During the investigation, State Police closed two lanes, one in each direction, causing major rush hour traffic congestion. The highway was fully reopened by 10 a.m.
