One dead, two in custody after fatal shooting, brief standoff in suburban Lake Worth; 71st homicide in Palm Beach County in 2013

One man is dead and two others are in custody after a shooting and a standoff Sunday morning in suburban Lake Worth, the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office said.

The homicide — the 71st in Palm Beach County during 2013, according to Palm Beach Post records — happened in the Indian Pines development north of Lantana Road and west of Military Trail.

Three men went into an unoccupied home in the 5900 block of Ithaca Circle around 9 a.m. Sunday. Gunshots were heard and two of them men came out of the house and entered a vehicle, said Teri Barbera, sheriff’s spokeswoman. The third man was found dead at the home.

Sheriff’s deputies saw the vehicle leave the home and apprehended one of the suspects immediately. The other man was spotted by a sheriff’s helicopter running into the back of a residence on Lincoln Circle, just south of Ithaca Circle, Barbera said.

It was not immediately clear whether the man knew the occupants in the Lincoln home, Barbera said. Someone inside the house called a family member, who contacted the sheriff’s office and led it to believe the man might have three hostages there.

The sheriff sent its SWAT unit to Lincoln Circle and evacuated homes in the area around 10 a.m. The man came out of the home after SWAT told him to do so, Barbera said, and it took him into custody. Residents of the area were allowed to return to their homes around noon.

The man is believed to have been involved in the homicide, Barbera said. Sheriff’s detectives who handle violent crimes were interviewing the suspects Sunday afternoon.
