West Palm Beach man, 21, stabbed father, 64, after dad turned off TV photo

A 21-year-old West Palm Beach man stabbed his 64-year-old father in the neck with a bread knife after his father shut off the television Thursday afternoon, according to a police report.

Neil Barrett faces charges of first degree attempted murder and will remain in jail without bail.

Around 3 p.m. on Thursday, West Palm Beach police were called to the 4100 block of San Marino Boulevard, just east of North Australian Avenue and south of Palm Beach Lakes Boulevard, where a man was stabbed in the neck.

That afternoon, Barrett was watching TV when his father, Gerald, turned it off, according to the report. Barrett grabbed a bread knife and stabbed his 64-year-old father in the neck, he later told police.

“Get down or I’m gonna kill you,” Barrett told his father when he stabbed him, according to police.

In court Friday morning, an assistant state attorney said the man is still in the intensive care unit at St. Mary’s Medical Center.

When Barrett left the apartment Thursday afternoon, his father called his sister.

“Come quick,” she remembered her father telling her. “Neil stabbed me.”

The sister told police her brother had previously mentioned killing their parents, according to the report.

Just after 8 p.m., Barrett was arrested about 5.5 miles from his home. An unnamed woman told police she answered the door and Barrett was outside and said, “I have done something bad.” It is unclear from the report if the two knew each other previously.

Barrett told police what happened and was arrested.

In October, the 21-year-old was arrested on burglary and petit theft charges. Last year he was arrested on a possession of marijuana charge.
