Man breaks Riviera Beach police officer’s nose after trying to escape police car

After two men were held in connection with an alleged armed robbery on Tuesday afternoon, one man took things a step further and broke a Riviera Beach Police officer’s nose, according to a police report.

Anton “Gunsmoke” Kittles, 21, faces charges of robbery with a firearm, aggravated battery with a firearm, aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer and grand theft. Travis Hayes, 31, faces charges of robbery with a firearm and grand theft. Judge Joseph Marx denied bond for both men at first appearance on Wednesday morning.

According the arrest report, Kittles and Hayes picked up Corey Harris from the 2200 block of Avenue H East in Riviera Beach for a ride in exchange for gas money. Harris told officers when he reached for his money, Kittles hit him in the head with a handgun and demanded he give him all his money, which totaled about $500. Harris said he gave the men the money and the two men let him go. Harris told officers he knew Hayes, but didn’t know the man who hit him with the gun, who he said was called “Gunsmoke.”

Another officer recognized the name “Gunsmoke” from previous encounters, according to the arrest report, and was able to identify him as Kittles.

The officers were able to locate Kittles at his residence, along with Hayes and a pick-up truck that matched the description given by Harris, according to the report. Both men were “detained pending investigation” and placed without handcuffs into the police car.

According to the report, Kittles tried to escape the car through an open window. When an officer went to put him back inside, Kittles punched the officer in the face, breaking his nose. Another officer shot Kittles with a stun gun to subdue him. Both he and the officer were transported to St. Mary’s Medical Center, according to the report.
