Boca Raton Police: Woman hits 5-year-old and cop with umbrella photo

After police say a 50-year-old woman hit a 5-year-old over the head with an umbrella, she used the same item to hit an officer in the stomach.

Claudia Russell faces charges of child abuse and battery on a law enforcement officer. She was set to leave Palm Beach County jail Wednesday afternoon on supervised released, according to jail records.

On Tuesday, Boca Raton police responded to the Florence Fulled Child Development Center’s playground, just north of Glades Road in between North Dixie Highway and North Federal Highway. A man told police a woman he didn’t know, later identified as Russell, hit his girlfriend’s 5-year-old with an umbrella.

When police questioned Russell, she said she did hit the child but only because the boy and a group of kids were throwing rocks at her. The officer noted in the report that there were no rocks in the area where she said the attack happened.

After an argument over where Russell’s identification was, she struck the officer in the stomach with her umbrella, according to the report. The officer grabbed the umbrella and the woman’s arm then put her in handcuffs, according to police.

Russell has no previous arrests according to the county records.
